Dear friends,
I’m somewhere special recording this episode, and I’m sharing my experience of an Advent sculpture I’m making, and my own journey through the next four weeks of Advent itself.
I hope you’ll join me, and I hope as usual that you’ll feel in company with me!
With Courage, Imagination and Love,
Beth
Here is the sculpture beginning, in the chapel at the Convent I am friends with.
I’m still needing to do a few things, but here is the simple sculpture nearly ready. It will change each week for Advent, as each candle gets lit - the winter solstice, the return of the Sun, and the birth of Christ.
And one last image of a reflection in the water once I’d filled it fully.
I’ll also add the words of the Gerald Manley Hopkins poem.
As Kingfishers catch fire.
As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame;
As tumbled over rim in roundy wells
Stones ring; like each tucked string tells,
each hung bell’s
Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name;
Each mortal thing does one thing and the same:
Deals out that being indoors each one dwells;
Selves - goes itself; myself it speaks and spells,
Crying What I do is me: for that I came.
I say more: the just man justices;
Keeps grace: that keeps all his goings graces;
Acts in God’s eye what in God’s eye he is - Christ - for Christ plays in ten thousand places,
Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his
To the Father through the features of men’s faces.
